Review of The Sword of Doom (1966) by Jeffrey F — 03 Dec 2012
My God, I wish they had kept making these. Nakadai and Mifune, together again. And this is the best coupling. The fear, the jealousy, the uncertainty in Ryunosuke - his cowardice, his strange style, his elusive motives, his torment, this is the stuff of true suspense.
Mifune is perfect as the stable, noble adversary, and the snow slaughter is one of my favorite scenes in all Japanese cinema. They say the sword is the soul of the samurai, and this movie is all about the soul of the anti-hero.
