Review of The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) by Mana A — 30 Mar 2009
This movie perfectly depicts the mechanism of envy, the fundamentals of charisma. The environment is fascinating (Italian coast in the 1950's).
Minghella is actually analyzing the human soul and personality. It's psychological and glamourous at the same time.
The main character is rich in emotions, deep and complex. manipultive, dangerous, but touchy.
The actors, both in main and second roles, are excellent.
Jude is brilliant in this role. He's just perfect in the role of a golden boy, charismatic and charming . He's full of light, vitality, ease, When his characters dies, the screen remains literally empty.
The soundtrack is absolutely great as well: the golden age of Jazz: the fifties.
Cate Blanchett and Gwyneth are also supleme.
This movie really breaths Italy and the 50s, one can feel that vibe transcending the screen.
A pure moment of pleasure for a cinefile.
