Review of The Thing from Another World (1951) by William O — 29 Feb 2012
While I first saw this in the 1990's, I can well imagine how people in a 1950's theater would have reacted. It didn't frighten me, but I really do enjoy the (to me) intelligent script (of course, based on Joseph Campbell's story).
This is classic horror, in that the audience doesn't need to see the creature that often to gain a sense of paranoia. However, it's actually more of an action/adventure flick, with horror and science fiction elements driving the storyline along.
A few scenes I really enjoy are when the Air Force personnel first arrive at the 'crash site', and the discussion of how to fend off the creature. My favorite character was 'Scotty', the reporter.
He basically sums up the movie, not with the classic closing line ("Keep watching the skies..."), but his response to learning more about the creature: "An intellectual carrot. The mind boggles.
".
