Review of The Void (2016) by Redlettered — 02 Aug 2017
The practical effects were good, and that's about all this movie had going for it. The plot is one of those vague, half-formed odes to cosmic horror that doesn't have much of an explanation for anything.
Mystery is fine, but this entire plot seemed more like a fever-dream than an actual plot - things were happening, the Bad Guy had his "I saw some weird stuff and now I am enlightened" speech, some characters had backstories crammed into 5 minute flashbacks that may or may not have been relevant to their inclusion in the endgame plot, monsters popped up and then promptly faded back into nothing .
.. I don't know. I saw nods to Lovecraft, the Hellraiser series, Re-Animator ... but no actual substance aside from monster gore and shaky, unexplained philosophy.
