Review of The Way of the Gun (2000) by Mike B — 25 Dec 2013
Highly underrated gem. I cannot fathom the naysayers, and those who label it "derivative." Name another film anything like it. You can't. Sloppy? Bullshit. Well-directed, and with a tight plot.
McQuarrie told me he wrote it in five days. An amazing accomplishment. The acting is excellent. I normally don't care for Juliette Lewis, but she was good in this. Her father was great as usual. Del Toro was amazing, and this performance is better than the one he won an Oscar for in TRAFFIC.
This is without a doubt Phillippe's best performance. As to sluggish... no. Crime prodedurals with any cleverness at all take significant set up. I suspect the naysayers either didn't get it, or didn't finish it.
