Review of The Way of the Gun (2000) by Luc L — 17 Sep 2012
This is a well made crime thriller with plenty of good performances (especially by Del Toro, Lewis, Caan and Diggs), terrific gunplay action sequences and some dark humour. It is about two dangerous low-lifes (Phillipe and Del Toro), who wants to hit it big time by kidnapping an pregnant woman (Lewis), who is protected by two mysterious bodyguards (Diggs and Nicky Katt).
They believe, they will hit pay dirt by kidnapping this young woman. But they find themselves way over their heads, when the kidnapped woman is connected to the mafia. "The Way of the Gun" is certainly one of the most underrated crime thrillers in awhile.
There is enough twists and story to keep the viewer interested but the movie does have its slow spots during the second act. There is no real sympathetic characters here but the writer and director McQuarrie makes his characters interesting.
Underrated to be sure, the film does manage to have an minor cult following over the years. If you haven't seen this, it is worth a look. In a way "The Way of the Gun" is a tribute to Sam Peckinpah's action movies.
