Review of The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) by Steve S — 20 Sep 2009
If you have an ounce of Irish blood, this film is a must. Exploring the beginning of and eventual splintering of the IRA, the violence is raw and emotional but essential to the story. Director Ken Loach is a master at deconstructing social and political issues through colorful characters and authentic dialogue.
In terms of art direction, this is definitely Loach's most visually engaging film to date, with the Cork countryside taking center stage. (It also doesn't hurt that the camera seems to love lead Cillian Murphy, who is probably best known for his role as the Scarecrow in the latest Batman movie franchise.
) Highly recommended; you will see the IRA through a different lens afterwards.
