Review of The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) by Marco F — 19 Jul 2009
WARNING! This film may not be what you think. When I saw two action heavy weights on the cover and a title like, "The Year of Living Dangerously." I thought to myself, this must be a phenomenal action movie.
But this is actually a slow burning Australian indie movie about political and romantic disaster in a third world country. I will readily admit that the transgendered performance of Linda Hunt as the pint sized firecracker Billy Kwan was completely deserving of the Oscar that she received for her portrayal.
BUT, the real issue is that her performance is the only thing keeping the movie afloat. Mel Gibson is tragically incoherent as he mutters in Australian English throughout the movie. I understand the point of getting into character and properly portraying Australian, this is ridiculous though! Imagine Muriels Wedding but without consonants.
I really didn't believe the chemistry between Mel and Sigourney, though Sigourney gave a decent performance as a British attache. About five minutes into the film I realized my mistake but I hoped that it would pick up and turn into a compelling romance story in a torrent of political upheaval.
Sadly, no such luck. Steer clear unless a sloth-like pace with moderate political intrigue grabs your attention!
