Review of This Is 40 (2012) by Darryl H — 21 Jun 2013
I think I was expecting this to be as funny as Apatow's other films. It wasn't but I think this film offers a reality to family life. I'm sure my own parents can tell you that I've accused them of "ruining my life" after I had received a punishment I deemed "unfair.
" That's where this film wins. If offers a gritty, real, unflattering, and oftentimes uncomfortable look at family and relationships. It helps clear the air in case there was any notion that family and married life is beautiful and perfect as a lot of Hollywood films suggest.
As she does in every film she's in, Melissa McCarthy steals the show in the brief scenes she's in. She's hilarious and I wouldn't mind hanging out with her for a day. Anyway, if you're looking for a film with a bit of reality to it but not one that's side splitting funny then I recommend This is 40.
