Review of This Sporting Life (1963) by Frank M — 06 Jun 2008
Lindsay Anderson's first feature is a poetic, raw portrait of an utterly destructive relationship.Beautifully shot(the rugby sequences are bone crunchingly realistic)and with two central performances of almost miraculous intensity(Harris is great, but Roberts is mesmerising),this is the kind of film we just don't make in this country anymore.
With the exception of Shane Meadows, there's still no one to touch Anderson's genius.
