Review of Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022) by Theredsky — 27 Sep 2022
George Miller’s newest film is odd to say the least. It has some cool ideas but it’s structure and pacing kill this movie. The movie presents itself with Elba’s character talking about different tales and stories to Tilda Swinton’s character.
The stories themselves are definitely very visually interesting and conceptually interesting but some are just kind of dull and some are very engaging. The final story that Idris Elba tells is easily the best.
However the transitions from story to story is really bad. One transition has Elba and Swinton finish an argument before Elba abruptly starts his next tale. The story then just becomes a completely different and odd love story in the last 20 minutes that doesn’t fit very well with the movie and comes out of nowhere.
It feels like George Miller had 2 different ideas for movies but shoved both of them together without finding a decent way to blend them together into one. The films technical aspects are all pretty great though.
The cinematography, production design, and visual effects are all really great especially the cinematography. Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba both give good performances however Swinton’s character really isn’t developed enough for me to care about her.
The film does a good job at developed Elba’s character out. There are a lot of great technical aspects to this movie but it’s poor execution really takes everything down. You can probably pass on this unless you’re interested in the premise.
