Review of Thunderheart (1992) by Michael T — 25 Jul 2008
Based on real life events, this film was a bit of a sleeper when it came out in the early 1990s. It starts off as a police procedural but Kilmer's part Sioux FBI agent starts to see visions of ghost dancers and cavalry charges from the 1890s.
Sam Shepard and Graham Greene deliver good performances as do Fred Ward and Sheila Tousey, but Kilmer's performance as a man who slowly undergoes a transormation sells the film. The film also lacks the romanticism of Kostner's DANCES WITH WOLVES (yes, I do seem to rag on Kevin a bit), which means you can still watch it today without thinking about the early 1990's "men's movement" and the mock-tribal ceremonies that white middle class guys attended as a result of "Kevin's Gate.
