Review of Time Out of Mind (2014) by Javier E — 24 Sep 2015
In the first 10 minutes, I was thinking, "What in the hell?? This is so boring" but it's so worth it to hang in there because I can't get this story out of my mind. It is such an honest portrayal of the homeless.
It was really fascinating. I found the "help" provided by government agencies truly mind-boggling in its total ineptitude. Wouldn't you think that there could be a one-stop shop to help people with all the services they need in one place? There aren't any real answers in this movie.
I'm not even sure there's much hope for George, but it's hard not to hold onto the possibility because despite his failings--and demanding beer from his estranged bartender daughter and repeatedly selling his coats to get money for beer are high on that list--it's hard not to feel real sympathy for this man, especially with the glimpses of humanity that show through.
I didn't even recognize Kyra Sedgewick in her role as a bag (shopping cart?) lady, but I recognized her voice! Ben Vereen was great as the poor guy who couldn't shut up and drove everyone crazy.
I recommend this movie.
