Review of Total Recall (2012) by Sgt. C — 29 Mar 2015
I wish I could have 2 hours of better memories implanted in place of the time I spent watching this bland and unnecessary remake of the Arnie "classic". I say "classic" because I'd say my perception of the relative quality of the original lies solely in the fact that I watched it many, many moons ago when I was far more impressionable and tolerant of B Grade schlock.
But maybe that's where the beauty of Verhoeven's vision lies and Len Wiseman's copy falls short - the original knows its audience (with Schwarzenegger as its star and an R rating) whereas this new version tries to cast its net too wide with its Bladerunner-esque setting, its beautiful cast and its generic CG action set pieces.
Ironically, there's a serious case of "seen it all before" syndrome throughout Total Recall and unfortunately, without anything new to add to the sci-fi genre, this film will undoubtedly fade from your memory like a bad dream.
