Review of Train to Busan (2016) by Healingtoolbox — 17 Oct 2020
For screenwriters: A minor masterpiece of "show don't tell" scripting. A much better script than most Hollywood films AAA on down. Example 1: Early on the Nintendo WII scene conveys volumes of the dad's perceived incapacity to "get fatherhood right.
" Example 2: The Toronto Telegraph reviewer Rebecca notes the dad has a character arc from selfish hedge fund manager, to competent, effective male caregiver, a wholesome father figure. This clear arc seems to have escaped Western reviewers; perhaps because, its context is Asian dads? Viewed in light of this character arc, film is a show don't tell minor-masterpiece.
As a sequel to World War Z it does the job also.
