Review of Travellers and Magicians (2003) by Sarah F — 30 Jan 2005
The first movie filmed in Bhutan, it makes great use of the beautiful mountainous scenery. The cinematography and color in the movie was very picturesque. I like the juxtaposition of the "travellers" and "magicians" storylines; although the method of storytelling was conventional, the alternate plot kept you engaged for the duration.
The character are not very well-developed, and the character arc that the protagonist experiences is expected, and it wasn't explained to my satisfaction. We don't really get to see what's makes him change.
However, it is capably active, and kept honest, without resorting to cheap sentimentality. I do believe that the movie has been overpraised by critics, although I can't blame them in the desolate wasteland of January releases.
