Review of Tron (1982) by James C — 16 Aug 2013
One of Disney's more original efforts, Tron is a very intriguing piece, if only due to its groundbreaking and unconventional visual style. Though dated today, the visual effects of the grid are still quite a feast for the eyes, and writer-director Steven Lisberger's handling of the action sequences is top-notch.
The world of the grid is by far the most involving aspect of the film, as you see how all of the isolated programs are ruled over tyrannically by the sentient Master Control. The human aspect, unfortunately, is sorely lacking.
While Lisberger does succeed in giving us a fun and likable hero in Jeff Bridges' Kevin Flynn, he fails to have us connect with any of his computer companions. Sure, Bruce Boxleitner gives a good, heroic performance as Tron, and David Warner makes for a good villainous presence both on and off the grid.
Bridges certainly tries as well, giving Flynn an almost childlike innocence in his love for his game creations. However, the story is simply not strong enough, though the interesting visual style will probably keep you watching until the end.
