Review of U2 3D (2008) by Michael W — 15 Apr 2008
I'm not a rabid U2 fan, but I like U2 and I particularly respect them as a band. I hated them during the Joshua Tree period, when they were most popular, but they sucked me back in when they showed they could reinvent themselves and be fresh. I mention this because I need to confess whatever bias I might have. U2 haters will hate this film, die-hard fans will ooze about this concert film to the grave.
I want to offer my opinion of this film as a concert film. For me, the pinnacle of concert films is Talking Heads' "Stop Making Sense". "U2 3D" comes pretty damn close due to the 3D innovation. Conceptually, I liked U2's "Zooropa" concert film from Australia better, but the 3D effect, the pristine stage that you could eat sushi off of, and the flawless performances made viewing this in the theater thrilling. And no, there are no close-ups of Bono in 3D, and that helps me give it a 10 out of 10 rating (every time Bono seems to approach the camera to put his mug squarely in frame, the director cuts away).
Not many concert videos get theatrical releases. This one, I felt, deserved it.
