Review of Up (2009) by Michael B — 07 Oct 2013
A near perfect gem. Pixar does it again. Up has everything one would want in a movie. It has adventure, laughs and will make the eyes of even the toughest guy tear up.
Up is bursting at the seems with the normal wave of Pixar color and level of detail. Almost everything has texture making the film seem that much more real.
With all that being said, the cgi is not what makes Up great. It's the story. It's not often a film is based around an elderly character. This allowed the film to explore themes that are usually avoided in most Hollywood films.
Themes like getting older and losing a loved one and having to move on might seem a bit heavy for an animated film, but it never pounds you over the head with it.
Another great part of Up is some of the action sequences. Some of the action scenes will have you on the edge of your seat. Hollywood action films could learn a thing or two about how to plot out an action scene.
In the end, Up has something for everybody. Kids will love the animals. The parents will get lost in the story. People who might be getting older will be able to relate and once the film is finished, have a new lease on life.
Getting old is not the end. It's just the beginning.
