Review of V/H/S: Viral (2014) by Kenny N — 06 Jul 2015
Definitely the weakest installment of the series. The wraparound segment is not another discovery of disturbing VHS tapes. In fact, there aren't any VHS tapes. It's about the Internet, making the title a tad bit misleading.
But nobody watches this for the usually flimsy thing connecting the segments together. They watch it to see what kind of mini-horror films will be served to them. In order: "Dante the Great" is shot as half-mockumentary, half conventional horror film.
It's a fine segment with some impressive special effects (the franchise has clearly gotten a budget upgrade), but it doesn't really seem to belong to the "VHS" series. It seems more appropriate for "The ABCs of Death" or some other horror anthology series.
The next segment, "Parallel Monsters," is from the director of the Elijah Wood/Sasha Grey film "Open Windows." It takes awhile to get going (which makes sense, as it's about two versions of the same man as they explore each other's parallel dimensions), but you won't believe what the horror is here.
The final segment, "Bonestorm," is the bloodiest one offered here. Three skateboarders, their extremely obnoxious videographer, a ditch in Tijuana and undead cultists. Stir them all together and you've got blood, guts, and the most uses of the word "dude" outside a Pauley Shore movie.
Save this one for last. Watch the "VHS" franchise in order. The first is very good, the second great, this one falls short but is still worth a look.
