Review of Val Lewton: The Man in the Shadows (2007) by Mark K — 23 May 2012
A loving, thorough ode to Lewton, who produced a string of exceptional, atmospheric horror thrillers for RKO. The films he oversaw are worthy of serious critical discussion, and this documentary demonstrates why that is that case, as well as why Lewton deserves to be considered an important figure not only in the annals of genre filmmaking, but in context of the Hollywood studio system of the 1940's, as well.
Martin Scorsese is the perfect choice to narrate, and you can sense the affection and admiration he has for the man and his work.
