Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by Matthew F. J — 26 Oct 2017
Besson delivers a heck of a visual feast, extremely inventive and beautiful to watch on a giant screen, the film is absolutely gorgeous from start to finish. The problem for me with the movie was the two lead actors that I couldn't connect with and quickly lost interest in their plots since both seemed wooden as hell and lacking many hours of sleeps regarding Dane Dehaan.
The plot was also a little confusing at times and I would have expected a little more from the visionary director of the Fifth Element, a film that I will always treasure. That being said the film is one of the coolest entry of the summer and gives something different to its audience, it's not a sequel nor a superhero movie but a fresh take on a European comic book and somehow it feels very refreshing to watch something so visually stimulating and holding a dear ecological and peaceful message at it's core.
