Review of Valhalla Rising (2009) by Scott M — 12 Dec 2010
Nicolas Winding Refn's films are excellent at creating a dark and unsettling mood, usually relying as little as possible on dialogue and instead on imagery to tell a story. I went in expecting this style, and was not disappointed.
Mads Mikkelsen is great as a mute, one-eyed slave/warrior named, you guessed it, One Eye. The cinematography is fantastic, but it would be hard to screw up given the amazing Scottish landscapes Refn was working with.
Refn, in my opinion, is a master filmmaker totally in control of his craft, and the fact that he can use that power to make a brutally violent art house film about Viking Crusaders is pretty awesome.
