Review of Venom (2018) by Jesse C — 09 Jan 2019
First the bad, if you read any Venom comics, they tend to have a bit of horror and comedy to them. This movie could have used a bit more horror and should have gone the extra mile with an r-rating.
Plus, the villain's the weakest I've seen in a Marvel movie (and it is a Marvel movie, it may not be in the MCU, but Venom is a Marvel character).
That being said though, they had some really creative action scenes, and the film did make me laugh at several points.
But what really made it for me, was Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom. Eddie and the symbiote are like a one man buddy-cop movie, and watching Tom Hardy have to banter with himself does make for some entertaining scenes.
Overall, I'm a fan of the character, and while the movie wasn't as good as I was hoping, it was leagues better then I was expecting. Now that the sequels confirmed 2 things I have to say.
1) Get a better villain (Which we already know we're gonna get, Woody Harrelson as Cletus Cassidy/Carnage, now that is perfect casting).
2)Go further with the horror aspect and go for that R-Rating. They went for PG13 in the hopes of crossing over with Spider-Man down the line. This movie outgrossed most of Spider-Man's movies, both Deadpool movies, and all the X-Men movies. Venom can make money on his own, go that extra mile to make his films as great as possible.
