Review of Vox Lux (2018) by Steve H — 16 Dec 2018
Hadn't even watched a trailer for this so the only background I had was a three sentence synopsis I read online. I would guess that how you feel about this film afterwards will depend a lot on whether you are attempting to view it as a character study versus a narrative. I found the opening scene extremely gripping, jump starting a very well written first act. While I definitely had some issues with the casting, Raffey Cassidy stood out as a young Celeste. I may not have been 100% satisfied with every narrative decision either, but appreciate what this film was attempting to explore. Debating between a 3.5* and a 4* here despite sharing more criticisms of this film than I have for others I have rated lower. Thought there was a great framework and although certain decisions may have bothered me, I still found this to be a solid picture.
*AMC A List #48.
