Review of War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) by Dave B — 19 Jul 2017
War for the Planet of the Apes.
???????? (A good end to a great trilogy).
This is the third film in the apes trilogy and while not the best instalment ('Dawn' holds that accolade still) it still delivers on the promise of the first 2 films. The effects are just jaw dropping once again. At no point do you think of the apes as being CGI, they just look so real. Andy Serkis once again shows that he is the best motion capture actor out there with a great performance as Ceaser. The film itself is a little smaller in scale than I was expecting. The title 'War' is probably a little misleading as there really isn't much of a war in this film. The film mainly concentrates on Ceaser looking for revenge after a tragedy perpetrated by Woody Harrelson's character as he follows his personal revenge mission. It largely works, but I was hoping for something on a much larger scale in this final film for it to go out with a bang. It does have a neat little link to original films for the 60's, which was clever and helped to explain why humans were the way they were in those films. While not perfect it's definitely worth a watch at the cinema.
