Review of Watership Down (1978) by Kevin R — 16 Sep 2010
The field. The field. It?s covered with blood.
A group of rabbits live in a warren in a nice cozy field. However, when one of the young rabbits sees signs that death is on the horizon, he warns his older brother that they must all leave. The oldest rabbit thinks the two brothers are crazy. The two brothers decide to leave on their own and they take several followers with them. As they search for new homes, they will find numerous obstacles to overcome including owls, dogs, humans, cars, hawks, and other rabbit warrens.
?If you want to bless me, you will have to bless my bottom.?
Martin Rosen, director of the Plague Dogs and Stacking, delivers Watership Down in his directorial debut. The storyline for this picture is amazing and compelling. The action scenes were intense and well delivered and the animation was appropriate for the content. The voices were well selected and include William Hurt, Richard Briers, Michael Cox, and John Bennett.
?They?ll never rest until they?ve spoiled the Earth.?
Watership Down was a movie I had to see after catching glimpses of it in the background during Donnie Darko. I was not disappointed with this film. The storyline is epic and the movie is intense with numerous gory kill sequences. I was shocked at how well this film delivered and exterminated the characters and I wonder why more films are not like this one. I strongly recommend seeing this picture.
?It had just killed. I saw blood on its lips.?
