Review of Welcome to Marwen (2018) by Steve H — 26 Dec 2018
I will always appreciate a film taking chances and trying something different over more formulaic and cliche approaches, even when the chances don't always pay off. It is nearly impossible for a narrative film to rival the documentary it is based on, however I still got much more out of Welcome to Marwen than most it sounds like. The character development was severely lacking and I would be interested to learn how much input Mark Hogancamp had in the making of this, and how he felt about the final product. While it wasn't always seamless I most enjoyed how the storytelling weaved between the real world and the world of Marwen, told through Mark's eyes using his model town and figures.
