Review of What Just Happened (2008) by Rodney E — 27 Jan 2013
From a professional point of view, meaning looking at it like I'm a big movie producer or whatever, the film is definitely intriguing. Being just a normal person, it's still entertaining. Seeing how things go down, and understanding how hard it might be to do some things like that. But what's wrong with the movie? Mainly one big thing. When the movie tries to be funny, most of the time it isn't. And this movie is a comedy right? I don't know...it seemed a little too dark for a premise like this, so I think that's where they made a big mistake.
So Robert De Niro plays this producer who is currently making two films. One with Bruce Willis, and the other with Sean Penn. The director of the Sean Penn flick is some crazy guy, and Bruce Willis wont shave his beard. So you can imagine the frustration. Amongst all of this he has children...from two wifes, and he has to deal with all of this stuff going on his life. Like I said before, it's an interesting movie idea, and I think it could have been executed A LOT better than it actually was.
So as I said before, this movie was just not funny when it was trying to be. Everything was a little too dark for itself, and while I may have chuckled a couple of times, I'm supposed to be laughing non-stop so...yea.
I think this movie just would have been a lot better if they just changed the genre and just cut out all of the bad jokes. Oh wait...maybe that wouldn't work cause of Bruce Willis. I don't know...
Anyway the film is shot sophisticatedly, and De Niro gives a pretty good performance, though he doesn't really do anything but reading his lines, so I don't know....yea.
Umm yea. So this movie was entertaining I guess, but again it was disappointing, because of all the faults. It could have been a lot better, but instead of being a great movie, it's a not so good movie, that I'd never want to see again. Everything just felt a little too...weird.
