Review of What We Do in the Shadows (2014) by Dan G — 02 May 2016
The daily life of a vampire.
What We Do in the Shadows is the biggest surprise of the year. Not only is it hilarious, but it is one most funny and original films of of the year also.
The directors, who both star in the film, are fantastic in their roles. As director and actors they both show great comedic talent. The film, with its quick and witty screenplay, is great when it comes to rewatchability. It's fun, laugh out loud funny, relying on visual comedy and jokes for the whole audience instead of crude humor which is what is mostly used these days.
On the negative side the film is short on story. It is definitely a slice of life with only the synopsis of "vampires living together." This is a problem for all films like this (Boyhood, Fury) but is still fascinating despite that. The film seems more like a pilot to what would be a fantastic series, but even though that's not the case it will suffice.
Overall What We Do in the Shadows is laugh out loud funny. It is definitely hilarious and one of the funniest movies of the year. The film is original, unique and unlike anything put to screen before. This director has big things ahead of him.
Rating: 7.9 (B+).
