Review of What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) by Mayank M — 27 Oct 2018
Every once in a while, one watches a movie that has no major plot twists, or a grand story. The movie makes no pretensions of being a "path-breaking" or melodramatic film. Its a simple story of a family, with 4 children and their mother.
15 minutes into the movie your are empathising with Gilbert Grape, the son who has to take care of his autistic brother and earn money to run the house. You are hoping there will be some redemption where he suddenly makes a lot of money or lands a great job or something else heroic.
But it never happens. The story progresses through routine daily events and yet leaves a profoud impact at the end of the movie. Gilbert Grape has his weak moments but is the epitome of dealing with adversity with grace.
Which is another way of saying that he has courage, of loving, caring, and losing. Wonderful movie.
