Review of What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) by Mandy L — 24 Apr 2012
Encore again! The cast genuinely, bluntly and lively portrait the routine of an assorted but distorted suburban family. Arnie is a beloved mental defective whom family cares and supports him unconditionally, especially his eldest brother Gilbert. Gilbert makes Arnie's everyday counted while strives every hard to protect his family - obese mother and two young sisters. He always puts the family at the first place which gradually becomes his responsibility and transforms into an unbearable burden.
I appreciate the brotherhood of Arnie and Gilbert, quite encouraging and moving. Besides, the unpretending cast combination, whimsy yet realistic storyline and the relieving ending also sparkle the movie.
"Do you know where is Arnie?".
"What do you want for you? Just for you?".
