Review of Wheelman (2017) by Hollywood H — 30 Jan 2018
A different take on the Getaway Driver genre, where the viewer does not leave the car until about an hour into the movie. Fast, yet very short, chase scenes punctuate the screen. My theory is budget was low for chase scene so a typical chase scene in this movie took around 3 minutes.
There wasn't much character development, like in "Drive" or "Baby Driver", but I don't think that was Jeremy Rush's goal in his directorial debut. He made a solid movie, where the focus was on Wheelman saving the day and keeping himself out of jail or the grave, rather than him growing and learning as a person.
Also, Caitlin Carmichael gives a great performance as Katie, Wheelman's 13-year old daughter. She did quite well when the focus was on her in parts of the film.
3 stars or 6/10 is my review. I will definitely keep an eye out for more films by Jeremy Rush.
