Review of Where the Crawdads Sing (2022) by Compi24 — 19 Jul 2022
When it isn't spinning its relatively safe yarn, "Where The Crawdads Sing" is a film that does take risks. Unfortunately, these risks aren't only to the film's detriment in a character-based manner, but in a borderline ethical one as well.
That murkiness isn't helped by the true-to-life shadiness surrounding the author of the novel which this film is adapted from. Honestly, it says a lot when I leave a movie wishing it had stuck to the dull, derivative and by-the-numbers trajectory it set upon for its first hour and fifty-five minutes.
At least with that I could've walked away disappointed and not downright insulted, which is what I'm feeling like now. Try as the performers and filmmakers might, it sounds to me like this project might've been a bit too much of a heavy lift to adapt to screen.
Not for me.
