Review of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016) by Lisa W — 25 Jul 2016
Apart from Martin Freeman's knickerwetting (in the kinkier sense of the word) Scottish accent, the movie catches very well how life in the Middle-East as a Wester journalist can turn you into an adrenaline addict and become eventually immune to the most horrifying stories about the middle-east i.
E. kidnapping, bombing and beggar boys crying over a dozen broken eggs, because all the network needs back home is a story. I loved how the movie sneaks in the romance and the hilarity into the first incredibly profane world of the American bubble in Kabul (Kabubble) which basically feels like a scout camp for white Caucasian adults who want to change their lives in Adventureland.
Tina Fey is a great choice as the "American white lady", she works incredibly well with Freeman, while the latter proves once again that is indeed a genius on screen - the character of Iain MacKelpie, the drunk scoundrel suits him amazingly.
Not to mention the sidekicks. Alfred Molina as the Afghani Attorney General with his sexual interest towards Fey gives us funny moments. It's a light movie about a serious war but that's the point of it all.
