Review of White Fang (1991) by Cassy H — 08 Jan 2010
Maybe my rating is a bit too generous but I will justify it in two points: 1. I am a huge fan of wolves. I think they are magnificent, beautiful creatures. 2. I had watched the brilliant but intense 'The Deer Hunter' right before I saw this movie, so the sweet story was very therapeutic.
That's not to say White Fang lacks distressing scenes. One scene in particular involving dog-fighting made me feel a little uneasy, considering this is a Disney produced movie aimed at a family audience. Ethan Hawke looks so young in this movie, I didn't realise it was him at first. He did a great job playing Jack, and his developing relationship with White Fang was really touching. 'Jed' was the star of the movie though, what a beautiful and talented creature he was.
Maybe if I watch White Fang another day when my mood is elevated, it might not have the same effect on me. Maybe it would? All I know is that I found this movie to be funny, sweet, sad, and redeeming. It's Disney of course!
