This movie pays homage to the book and to some extent to NYC. If you have read the book you will love the movie. If you have not read the book - cover to cover - including the historical context at the end - like the NYC Blackout of '77 caused by lightning - you might not be in the right wavelength to get what the movie is about as evidenced by many of the comments here.
Read the book, it is a quick read with lots of pictures, then go see the movie.
