Review of Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018) by Jonathan S — 15 Jun 2018
Mr. Rogers passed when I was 18 years old, my first year of adulthood, about 10 years after I "outgrew" his television show. The very show that I had loved to watch as a child yet never fully realized how much it would set the tone for the rest of my life.
It taught me kindness, embracing imagination, patience, how things were made, love, routine, and feelings. He was one of my first friends. All of that rushed back to me tonight in the theater. I was transformed to my 4-year-old self, fixated to the large silverscreen as if it were the old 1980s-era RCA television set in mom's living room, listening intently as Mr.
Rogers posthumously picked up where he left off, teaching me about love, compassion, kindness, openness, and that despite the current climate in the world, good still exists. It's still out there.
It's still inside of me, a grizzled 33-year-old man no longer with the rose-colored lenses I once wore as a child with a simpler life with so much ahead of me. This is a very important documentary that every person of all ages could learn from.
Thank you, Mr. Rogers.
