Review of Woody Allen: A Documentary (2011) by Stephen R — 07 Jul 2012
Doesn't get under the skin of Allen at all, and doesn't even seem to try. This film was very obviously keen to flatter its subject. Because of my love of many of Woody Allen's films, especially the magnificent Crimes and MIsdemeanors, I enjoyed many of the clips and anecdotes about his childhood, but as the film stretched on to the end I began to feel cheated.
The Soon-yi story should either have been dealt with or ignored. By skimming over it, Weide tried to give the impression that this was a genuine examination of Allen's life, but the pretence was all too transparent.
The elephant in the room, I felt, was not so much Soon yi as Mia Farrow.
