Review of Yesterday (2019) by The3Academysins — 06 Jan 2020
Under-developed and under-explored, Yesterday takes an amazing premise and turns it into a color-by-numbers romantic drama. What's upsetting to me is that this movie could have been GREAT. The idea that one man can remember The Beatles music and run with it presents so many cool possibilities that the story completely ignores in favor of some really uncomfortably awkward fling.
The performances are okay. The story really misunderstands the concept of music, and acts like the songs are good enough to stand on their own without an extremely charismatic performer. The direction is really bland, but does have a stylistic flair that appears out of nowhere for one or two scenes.
Overall, this movie is just kind of "meh.
