Toshiro Mifune is undoubtedly the inspiration behind the western idea of badass. It's no doubt that "A Fistful of Dollars" and "Last Man Standing" wanted to remake this - although it's still definitively Kurosawa, it's the most western feeling film I've seen of his yet.
